thats right - very interesting. I have noticed several on ShivaGange betta when I visited there long ago. adhralloo ondhu scary basava idhe matthe jana adhanna pradhakshiNe haakthaare - it is at the peak - although there is a railing setup around the nandi - but still scary to go around the statue.
I belive i noticed a few on Nandi hills - adhsari hesarE haeLaththe nandi betta antha.

However, Nandi's presence marks the presence of a Shiva temple there, Shiva linga must also be there at that place...do check with Prashanth.
