Unless I'm missing something, pulling any two opposite sides should do it..

looking at the picture - I assume it has 4 bend pipes (90deg) and 4 smaller pipes.
steps:
i. insert 2 smaller pipes into one L-joint (a) on 2 ends --> this forms a right angle
ii. add another L-joing (b) to the other end of smaller pipe; so this becomes somewhat like a J.
iii. add another smaller pipe to other end of (b)

2nd set
i. connect remaining 2 L-joints (c) and (d) with a remaining smaller pipe --> so this forms somewhat like "U" (wider)

Now, bring 2 sets together to have 2 ends of (c) , (d) and one from the step iii above.

to dismantle:
i. hold 2 opposite (parallel) sides of this square and pull away.
